About the Role The Sr. Director, Business Relationship Manager sits at the center of IT and the business, making sure technology solutions line up with company goals and deliver real value. The role blends relationship management, product lifecycle ownership, and strategic planning to drive innovation, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
This is a transformational role, not a maintain-the-status-quo one. The business relationship function is relatively new and has significant room to grow, and the client is looking for a leader who can mature it toward a true advisory partnership with the business. The right person comes in with a clear point of view, lays out the two or three things to tackle this year and the two or three for the year after, and keeps moving the function forward. Expect heavy inbound communication from the business and a lot of internal interaction, with the ability to read what is happening across the organization and translate it into business impact.
Responsibilities
Strategic Business Partnership
- Act as the main connection between business units and IT, translating business needs into clear technology initiatives.
- Build a deep understanding of business strategy, goals, and challenges so IT priorities line up effectively.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with business partners to keep everyone aligned.
- Mature the business relationship function over time, moving it toward a strategic, advisory level of partnership.
Product Management
- Define the vision, strategy, and roadmap for key products and services.
- Own the full product lifecycle, from idea and development through deployment, maintenance, and retirement.
- Lead cross-functional teams to prioritize features and enhancements based on business value and customer needs.
- Run market and user research to find opportunities for innovation.
Portfolio and Demand Management
- Support the portfolio of IT projects and products so resources are used well and deliverables match business priorities.
- Set up processes to collect, evaluate, and prioritize business requirements and IT demand.
- Track and report on the performance and value of IT investments and products.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Management
- Drive collaboration across IT teams, product managers, and business partners.
- Serve as a trusted advisor, communicating clearly at every level of the organization.
- Provide regular updates on product roadmaps, project progress, and outcomes to senior leadership.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Spot and champion ways to use emerging technology and industry trends to solve business problems.
- Build a culture of continuous improvement through feedback loops and performance metrics.
- Partner with IT teams to apply agile and DevOps practices that improve delivery speed and quality.
Leadership and Culture
- Lead, coach, and develop a team, including senior team members.
- Shape company culture through actions such as mentoring, volunteering, and joining cross-functional efforts.
- Deliver strategy through an enterprise lens, staying current on key initiatives, industry trends, and business results.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field.
- 10 years of product management in personal lines insurance. Commercial lines insurance experience considered in place of personal lines.
- Personal lines or commercial lines insurance background, ideally pulled from prior insurance carriers.
- People-leadership experience, including the ability to manage and coach senior team members.
- Solid technology background with a deep understanding of product development.
- Transformational track record of maturing a function or program, not just running it as-is.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects and deliver results.
- Experience with data analysis and visualization tools.
- Proficiency in agile methodologies and product management tools such as Jira, Asana, or Trello.
- Proven leadership, shown through 5+ years leading teams or large cross-functional programs, with at least 2 of those years directly managing others.
Nice to Have
- DevOps experience.
- ITIL knowledge.
- Experience taking an IT or business relationship function up the maturity curve toward an advisory model.
