SUMMARY
This position is to provide practical experience to students interested in pursuing a degree in accounting and/or finance. The primary responsibility for this position is to scan journal entry support and attach documents (electronically) in the City’s accounting software. This person will spend time each week with all members of the accounting and finance team, gaining exposure to a wide range of accounting and finance functions.
The internship program can be scaled down to fit the time schedule of the student. The maximum length of time is 16 weeks per year during May – September.
Curriculum Weeks 1-3 with Controller
- Introduction to Municipal Accounting Software
- Journal Entry creation, support documentation, entry, and posting
- Scan/attach journal entries to facilitate audit and records retrieval
Weeks 4-7 with Accounts Payable Clerk/Accountant
- Introduction to encumbrances (Requisition s; POs)
- Invoice entry (account coding, payment-date timing, batch processing)
- Grant reporting and support documentation
Weeks 8-12 with Finance and Budget Director
Weeks 13-16 with Finance and Budget Director
- Research on charges for services (Florida cities of similar size)
