Controller

A High-Impact Financial Leadership Role in a Growing Construction Environment

About The Opportunity

This is not a traditional, back-office Controller role.

You’ll serve as a key financial leader within a growing construction organization—partnering closely with operations, influencing project performance, and helping drive scalable, profitable growth.

We’re seeking a hands-on Controller with strong construction accounting expertise who can bring structure, insight, and accountability to the finance function. This is an opportunity to step into a visible role where your work directly impacts decision-making at the leadership level.

About the Organization

  • Established and stable company with a strong reputation in its market
  • Mid-sized team with consistent year-over-year growth
  • Provides specialized contracting and service-based solutions
  • Long-standing client relationships across institutional and commercial sectors
  • Collaborative leadership team with a practical, team-first approach
  • Focused on sustainable growth, operational excellence, and long-term employee retention

What You’ll Own Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Lead and manage the monthly close process with a focus on accuracy and timeliness
  • Prepare and deliver financial statements in accordance with GAAP and industry standards
  • Maintain and analyze Work in Progress (WIP) schedules, including percent-complete and margin projections
  • Partner with external financial advisors on year-end close and financial reviews
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial systems and reporting tools

Project & Operational Partnership

  • Collaborate closely with project and operations teams to monitor financial performance
  • Provide insight into job costing, variances, and profitability
  • Support billing processes, including progress billing and contract compliance
  • Help drive consistency in cost coding and financial tracking across projects
  • Contribute to bid support and financial components of project planning

Cash Flow & Business Performance

  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and project-level financial needs
  • Develop and maintain short-term cash flow forecasts
  • Support budgeting and forecasting initiatives
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and visibility
  • Provide leadership with actionable financial insights to support decision-making

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and develop a small accounting team across AP/AR and payroll functions
  • Establish clear processes, accountability, and structure within the department
  • Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented team environment
  • Act as a key contributor to cross-functional leadership discussions

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations, prevailing wage requirements, and industry standards
  • Support audits, bonding requirements, and insurance processes
  • Maintain strong internal controls and financial safeguards

What You Bring

  • 5–10+ years of accounting/finance experience, with construction industry experience required
  • Strong expertise in:
    • WIP & percentage-of-completion accounting
    • Job costing and cost coding
    • Prevailing wage compliance
  • Experience with construction accounting systems (e.g., Sage or similar)
  • Proven ability to partner effectively with operations and project teams
  • Hands-on, proactive approach with strong problem-solving skills

Why This Role

  • High visibility and direct impact on business performance
  • Opportunity to shape and improve financial processes in a growing company
  • Close partnership with leadership and operations
  • Stable environment with long-term growth potential
