Acclime is seeking an experienced and highly skilled individual to join our Taxation team as an Assistant Manager.

As an Assistant Manager, one of your key roles will be to provide taxation advice and assistance to international expatriate clients of Acclime. Expatriate clients exist from Acclime’s leading active investor plus migrant and film production advisory business (visiting cast & crew on live action shows in NZ).

Working with the film and entertainment team provides a unique opportunity to contribute to international creative projects, to participate in the back-office workings of renowned films and television series such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman, Thor: Ragnarök, The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Twisted Metal, Chief of War and Sweet Tooth.

Responsibilities:

  • With the support of the tax team, you will be responsible for managing Acclime’s portfolio of expatriate clients, including direct communication with clients, their accountants and advisers (typically abroad), local NZ production company accountants and the IRD.

  • Work on a wide range of client challenges, including issue resolution, planning and structuring.

  • Undertaking technical research on taxation law (NZ and foreign) and IRD pronouncements.

  • Drafting reliable advice on taxation matters.

  • Providing direct support to accountants across Acclime in managing complex compliance obligations.

  • Engage with clients to provide guidance and understanding of tax issues and opportunities arising for their business and individual situations.

  • Liaise with IRD on matters of review or opportunity for Acclime clients, including challenging IRD views.

  • Foster strong relationships with the broader team to identify, advise on, and address tax issues and opportunities across the client base.

  • Pro-active identification of potential tax opportunities and risks from developments in the law and IRD practices across the Acclime business.

  • BD initiatives including client newsletters, information memo letters, maintaining an external network of contacts and building your personal brand as a tax practitioner and representative of Acclime.

  • Harvesting of tax issues (opportunities and de-risking strategies and implementation) from existing client base.

  • Stay current with tax development (law and IRD), proactively raise relevant issues across the practice and support staff training and development sessions.

  • Build knowledge and interest in key business sectors relevant to your work such as the NZ film industry, gaming, immigration developments and investment funds.

  • Continual self-development through work and industry, taxation and sector forums.

What are we looking for?

  • A bachelor’s degree in commerce/accounting and completed/soon to completed CPA/ CA ANZ

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build strong working internal relationships.

  • Proven ability to manage client relationships and deliver high-quality outcomes.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability manage teams.

  • A proactive approach to self-learning through work experience, industry insights and participation in taxation and sector forums.

  • Strong technical knowledge in key tax aspects including NZ residence rules, transitional residence exemption rules, application of double tax agreements for relief from NZ taxation, and the operation of NZ’s personal service attribution (PSAR) rules.
