VP of Finance Controller Jobs in Ann Arbor, MI at Crown
Title: VP of Finance Controller
Company: Crown
Location: Ann Arbor, MI
About Crown Electrokinetics
Crown Electrokinetics is a small operating company launching DynamicTint, a patented electronically tinting window film technology that reduces energy use and carbon emissions across commercial, residential, and automotive applications.
Crown's shares currently trade on the OTC markets. We moved off Nasdaq in 2025 after share price fell below listing minimums, and we are working toward relisting on a major exchange as part of our plan. We would rather you hear this from us than discover it on your own.
The Opportunity
Crown is hiring a VP of Finance / Controller with a defined path to CFO. This person will run Crown's accounting operations day-to-day, participate directly in the preparation of our SEC filings to regain compliance, and to relist on a national exchange. Our expectation is that the ideal candidate will quickly grow into the CFO role.
This is a hands-on position. You will manage the books, reconcile accounts, prepare the financial statements for audits, and prepare the Company’s SEC filings. You will be the primary interface to our certified public auditors, the Audit Committee, and the Board of Directors. As Crown grows, the scope of the role will grow with you, with the CFO title as the planned next step. We are looking for a real partner in this work, not a pair of hands.
Is This You?
This role is for someone who:
- Runs the full accounting cycle and wants to own the financial operations end-to-end
- Sees Crown's regaining of SEC compliance as a chance to step into the ownership of public company reporting
- Gets satisfaction from clean financials, tight close cycles, and a timely audit
- Wants broader ownership and is ready to grow into the CFO role
What You Will Own
- The full accounting operation: AP, AR, payroll, bank reconciliations, and the monthly, quarterly, and annual close
- The general ledger, accounting policies, and GAAP-compliant financial statements
- Cash flow, treasury, and banking relationships
- Federal, state, and local tax compliance
- Internal controls over financial and tax reporting
- Preparation to serve as Principal Accounting Officer as Crown approaches regaining compliance, with personal responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the company's financial reporting
- The external audit engagement, from planning through opinion, as the primary management interface to the Audit Committee
- The annual operating budget and rolling forecasts
- Monthly variance analysis and management reporting to the CEO and President, plus quarterly Board materials and benchmarking analyses
- Active participation in Crown's SEC reporting process alongside external advisors
Your Qualifications
- BS in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
- 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including recent time in a senior controller or equivalent role
- Strong technical GAAP knowledge, applied hands-on
- Proven ability to run a full close cycle independently, including AP, AR, payroll, reconciliations, and month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close
- 10-K and 10-Q preparation experience, or strong working knowledge of SEC reporting requirements, including drafting, tie-out, disclosure controls, and auditor interaction
- Familiarity with PCAOB audits, or audit readiness
- Working experience with QuickBooks, or comparable ERP systems
- Comfort operating in a lean organization where initiative and judgment matter
- Background managing or mentoring junior accounting staff is a plus
Who You Are
- Precise, organized, and able to produce clean, reliable financials without supervision
- A clear communicator who earns trust with non-finance colleagues
- A collaborative partner to a CEO and President who are engaged in the business
- Honest about what you know and what you are still learning
How We Work
Crown operates with minimal bureaucracy and direct accountability. We trust the team to exercise judgment and own their work. Good finance, in our view, is not about gatekeeping. It is about giving the business the information and structure it needs to decide and move with confidence. We measure performance by the quality and impact of the work, not the hours behind it. If you take pride in clean financials, earn trust through reliability, and help deliver a great product, you will fit in here.
Compensation and Location
- Base salary: $165,000 to $200,000, depending on experience
- Meaningful stock option grant; specific terms will be discussed at the offer stage
- Medical, vision, and dental insurance
- Based primarily on-site in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are building this company in person. You'll have flexibility when you need it, but the expectation is that you show up, work alongside the team, and are present for what matters. If you're looking for a remote-first role, this isn't it.
To Apply
If this sounds like the step you are ready to take, we would like to hear from you.
Apply through LinkedIn. Include your resume and a brief note, one or two paragraphs, describing your experience running a full close cycle and your role in public company reporting work, whether as part of a filing team or in a pre-public audit-readiness context. A short, specific note beats a long, generic one.
Employment with Crown is at-will. Nothing in this posting is intended to create an employment contract or alter the at-will relationship.
Crown does not currently offer visa sponsorship for this role.
