Vice President, Environmental Commodity Strategy Jobs in Calgary, Canada at BMO

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct in‑depth research using policy / regulatory documentation, industry reports, technical journals, and financial disclosures and synthesize into actionable insights across multiple environmental commodity markets.
  • Track macro and cross‑market and commodity linkages (energy inputs, cost curves, FX, rates) and communicate second‑order impacts on fundamentals.
  • Maintain a structured view of key risks and opportunities: supply disruptions, demand shocks, structural changes, geopolitics, and regulatory developments that affect environmental commodity pricing and availability.
  • Build and maintain dynamic and complex financial models for environmental commodity markets (e.g., low carbon fuels, carbon credit markets, etc.).
  • Build and maintain commodity supply and demand balances (production, consumption, inventories) and translate findings into clear market implications.
  • Develop market views by tracking key drivers and evaluating development on an ongoing basis; present findings to internal partners and clients to assist with risk management decisions.
  • Incorporate new information quickly into models and outlooks, producing ad‑hoc analysis during market‑moving events.
  • Provide market intelligence and tailored insights to support client discussions and idea generation; help translate complex fundamentals into actionable commentary.
  • Support partners in trading by delivering outputs from financial analysis and modelling to support corporate and institutional client risk management decisions.
  • Collaborate with risk management, compliance and legal teams to monitor evolving market regulations and policy changes.

Qualifications

  • Requirement for an undergraduate degree. Focal areas of finance, economics, engineering, or a related field.
  • 2‑6+ years of experience in commodity market analysis, equity research, investment banking or related roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in building complex and dynamic financial models; any programming experience supporting automation and data analytics applicable to commodities is considered a strong asset including but not limited to languages such as Python, R, Microsoft VBA, etc.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts to internal stakeholders and clients.

Desirable Skills

  • Familiarity with policy and regulatory drivers relevant to environmental commodity markets.
  • Familiarity with energy transition thematics, technologies, and cost drivers.

Salary

Base salary: $160,000 CAD.

Pay type:

Salaried. Salaries will vary based on location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications. Pay may include commission structure and performance‑based incentives. Part‑time salaries are pro‑rated. BMO offers health insurance, tuition reimbursement, accident and life insurance, and retirement savings plans.
