A growing alternative finance lender is looking for a Senior Underwriter who genuinely understands underwriting. Not someone who just ticks boxes – someone who can read accounts, spot the issues, understand affordability, and make smart credit decisions without needing their hand held.
This isn’t a corporate machine. It’s a human-led lender supporting underserved UK SMEs – no algorithms, no red tape, no bureaucracy. The team is small, friendly, and personable. You’ll work directly with senior stakeholders who joined to build something exciting. If you have a great idea, they’ll implement it. Your work gets recognised. Your opinion matters.
The role:
You’ll be doing real underwriting. Manual assessment of SME proposals – diving into P&Ls, balance sheets, cash flow forecasts. Understanding the gap in cashflow, spotting HMRC debt in accounts, working out the real affordability picture. Not relying on scorecards or automated decisions – using your brain and experience to make smart lending calls.
You’ll structure deals, challenge proposals, work with introducers and clients to get the full picture. You’ll mentor junior colleagues, improve processes, and genuinely shape how the business underwrites risk. It’s the kind of role where you’ll use your Excel skills properly and your credit judgement actually gets valued.

So, if you have:
- 3+ years underwriting SME lending – Unsecured or Secured
- Strong manual underwriting experience – you know how to read accounts properly
- Deep understanding of P&Ls, balance sheets, cash flow forecasts
- Can spot affordability issues, debt problems, HMRC arrears, cashflow gaps
- Understanding of the credit cycle and what makes SME lending tick
- Can think outside the box and structure deals that work
- Strong communication skills – you’ll be liaising with clients and introducers
