POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Senior Director, Operational Accounting, the Manager, Operational Accounting – Major Projects division is responsible for delivering accurate and timely financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting, and in-depth financial analysis to support strategic business decisions. The individual will partner with the operational teams to provide financial insight, clarity, and operational discipline and will be the key contact for the division for all accounting matters. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of percent-of-completion accounting, cost-to-complete forecasting and the management of risks related to change orders, claims, and contract modifications.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Partners with the Senior Vice President, Recurring Revenue Division, and regional management and operations across multiple regions to support project profitability and cost effectiveness.
  • Drive financial analysis of projects ranging from small to large multi-million-dollar projects, including revenue and work in progress.
  • Drive monthly forecasts to produce accurate outlooks and enable achievement of operational and financial objectives.
  • Act as a liaison between management, estimating, and the operations to validate assumptions and ensure the accurate flow of information.
  • Variance analysis of job and regional financial results against budget and forecast, focus is on interpretation of the data and aggregation of operational explanations including the rollup of reporting at the divisional level.
  • Analyze fleet costs charged to regions and highlight/recommend areas of opportunity.
  • Prepare and/or approve journal entries, prepare account reconciliations related to the operations, and recognize revenue according to revenue recognition policy.
  • Schedule and run the month-end closing process in accordance with the timelines coordinated with Corporate Accounting.
  • Key contributor to annual budgeting and planning process.
  • In depth knowledge of contract requirements for billing and ability to identify contract risk.
  • Project specific reporting and analysis for internal and external clients.
  • Review of open jobs and purchase orders, work alongside Operations to close in a timely manner.
  • Maintains systems, procedures, and policies in accordance with Forbes guidelines.
  • Actively monitor outstanding account receivables balance, partners with operations on timely payment collections from clients
  • Key Contributor to annual financial statement audits.
  • Assist in regulatory audits (WCB, indirect taxes, etc.) and annual audit processes.
  • Other projects and duties within the financial services department as assigned.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance
  • Chartered professional accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Experience with large, complex, multi-year contracts is an asset.
  • Leadership experience is an asset.
  • 8-10 years of related accounting or financial analysis experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of overall accounting experience related to project accounting or financial analysis.
  • In depth knowledge of operational accounting, job profit analysis, and cost analysis
  • Experience applying complex job costing principles and variance analysis.
  • Work in progress preparation and analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel (including VLOOKUP, Pivot Table, IF Functions)
