Overview
Junior Accountant Jobs in Amsterdam Area at neno
Title: Junior Accountant
Company: neno
Location: Amsterdam Area
Europe's first full-stack AI financial services company
We merge best-in-class financial technology; banking, payments, invoicing, accounting, payroll and tax with embedded expert advisory services.
Our team is made up of ambitious, unapologetically curious, slightly crazy ex-founders, fintech operators, AI engineers, creatives and corporate finance experts from the big4 from all over the world.
We’re serious about excellence, but we’re anything but boring: on weekends you might find us at techno parties, wine tastings, football matches or training new models for fun.
If you thrive in a high-commitment, high-reward culture and want the autonomy to deliver your best work, this will be the most exciting team you ever join.
Neno is backed by Firstminute Capital, Motive Partners and angels from Miro, Coinbase, Mollie, Juni, Deel, Navro, Copper, Wise & PayPal.
The role
We are looking for an Junior Accountant to take meaningful ownership across a portfolio of SME clients and help build the accounting practice that sits at the heart of Neno's proposition. You will support the administration & management of client relationships, lead month-end close processes, handle tax filings, and contribute directly to payroll, while working alongside AI engineers and product builders to continuously improve how we deliver these services.
Over time, this role has a clear path toward Senior Accountant as Neno scales across the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Spain.
You understand that working at an AI-native company means your job is not just to do the accounting, it is to help make the accounting smarter. You will actively identify workflow inefficiencies, translate them into product requirements alongside our engineering team, and use AI tools daily to raise the quality and speed of your own output.
What this role is not
Your job is going to be everything but easy or straight-lined. You will be required to context switch, think for yourself, problem-solve and sometimes work more than the required hours to get high-priority projects over the line. Building a company like Neno is fun, and we celebrate the wins and learn from the losses and never repeat the same mistakes. This is what it takes to win. And we only want to win.
What impact you will have
Support our senior accountants across a portfolio of 50 Dutch SME clients end-to-end: bookkeeping, reporting, tax compliance and year-end close
- Be the primary accountant your clients trust, responsive, accurate and proactive about issues before they become problems
- Drive continuous improvement in how Neno serves clients, feeding observations directly into our product roadmap
- Help shape the standard operating procedures, checklists and quality controls that the whole accounting team works from
Responsibilities
Client Accounting & Reporting
- Manage complete bookkeeping for your SME client portfolio using Exact Online and Neno's proprietary platform
- Prepare and deliver monthly and quarterly management accounts with clear commentary for business owners
- Lead year-end close processes and coordinate with external auditors where applicable
- Proactively flag financial anomalies, cash flow risks and compliance deadlines to clients, do not wait to be asked
Tax Compliance
- Prepare and file Dutch VAT (BTW) returns independently on a monthly and quarterly basis
- Prepare income tax (IB/VPB) workings and support filing in collaboration with senior accountants
- Stay current with Dutch tax legislation and proactively advise clients on changes that affect them
- Support expansion into Belgian and Spanish tax compliance frameworks as the practice grows
Payroll Administration
- Process monthly payroll for client portfolios: starters, leavers, salary changes, bonuses and expense reimbursements
- Prepare and submit loonbelasting (wage tax) declarations accurately and on time
- Advise clients on basic Dutch employment-related financial matters: 30% ruling, travel allowances, holiday accruals
Team & Mentorship
- Review and sign off on bookkeeping and payroll work completed by junior accountants and working students
- Provide structured feedback and on-the-job coaching to help junior team members develop
- Escalate complex client or technical issues to senior accountants with clear context and a proposed resolution
AI-Native Workflows
- Use AI tools (e.g., Claude) daily as a genuine accelerant: document review, tax research, client communication drafting, anomaly identification
- Proactively identify manual or repetitive tasks in your workflow and work with the engineering team to automate them
- Contribute to the development of Neno's AI-assisted accounting playbook — your practical experience is valuable input for the product
What we're looking for
Experience
- 3+ years of hands-on accounting administration experience, ideally within a Dutch SME accounting firm or FinTech environment
- Independent management of BTW returns and year-end close processes

- Exposure to Dutch payroll (loonbelasting, NMBRS, Loket or equivalent) is strongly valued
- Experience across multiple entity types: BV, eenmanszaak, VOF and stichting
Technical & Accounting Skills
- Strong command of Dutch GAAP (RJ) and working familiarity with IFRS for SME clients
- Proficient in Exact Online or experience with Twinfield, AFAS, MoneyBird
- Solid understanding of Dutch tax law: BTW, VPB, IB and loonbelasting
- Comfortable working across structured and unstructured financial data
AI-Native Mindset
- You use AI tools (e.g., Claude) as part of your daily accounting workflow, not as a novelty
- You are curious about automation and actively look for ways to eliminate repetitive manual work
- You understand that your job is to raise the quality of the output, not to protect the process that creates it
Professional Qualifications
- HBO or WO degree in Accountancy, Business Economics or Finance
- Progress toward or completion of AA, RA or equivalent qualification is a strong plus
- Fluent in Dutch (essential) and English (professional working level)
Ways of Working
- Precise, deadline-driven and highly organised across a multi-client portfolio
- Proactive communicator: clients and colleagues always know where things stand
- Comfortable operating with autonomy and comfortable asking for help when the situation calls for it
- Systems thinker: you see patterns across clients, not just individual problems
