bout the Role Our client, a stable and growing organization within the energy and commodities sector, is seeking an Indirect Tax Manager to support and enhance its multi-state tax function. This is a newly created role driven by growth, offering a unique opportunity to step into a hands-on leadership position overseeing indirect tax compliance, reporting, and process improvements across a complex regulatory environment.
Position Overview The Indirect Tax Manager will be responsible for overseeing sales and use tax, utility users tax, and gross receipts reporting across 40+ states. This individual will play a key role in ensuring compliance, supporting financial reporting, and partnering with accounting and external advisors. The role combines technical expertise, operational execution, and team leadership, making it ideal for someone looking to grow within a high-impact function.
Key Responsibilities Manage and review multi-state indirect tax filings, including:
Sales & use tax Utility users tax (city, county, and state) Gross receipts tax Ensure timely and accurate compliance across 40–50 jurisdictions; maintain and manage a tax calendar Oversee exemption certificates, direct pay permits, and government reporting requirements Reconcile tax accounts and support the month-end close process, including booking tax-related entries Assist with tax provision support and documentation requests Partner with external advisors (Deloitte) to support corporate tax matters and audits Conduct tax research and analyze implications related to energy/commodity transactions Monitor tax law changes and ensure ongoing compliance Respond to tax notices and manage interactions with state and local tax authorities Review contracts and identify indirect tax implications Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation within the tax function Collaborate cross-functionally with accounting, operations, and commercial teams Supervise and mentor a team of 2 tax staff members Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 5+ years of indirect tax experience (sales & use tax required) Strong experience with multi-state compliance and regulations Solid understanding of general accounting and close processes
Experience with tax reconciliations, audits, and research Advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, lookups) Highly detail-oriented with strong communication and organizational skills Preferred: CPA designation
Experience with in energy, utilities, or commodity trading environments Exposure to utility users tax or gross receipts tax Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco/Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs.
