Overview
A fast-growing, entrepreneurial real estate investment firm is seeking a Real Estate Fund Controller to lead accounting, financial operations, and technology initiatives across its commercial real estate platform. This role sits at the intersection of accounting, finance, and systems, with approximately 50% of the focus dedicated to building scalable processes, implementing technology, and supporting data-driven decision making in a startup environment.
This position offers a clear and defined path to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) as the company continues to scale.
The ideal candidate will have deep experience in real estate fund accounting, strong financial acumen, and a passion for leveraging technology to drive efficiency and growth.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all fund and corporate accounting functions, including general ledger, month-end close, and financial reporting
- Manage accounting for commercial real estate investments, including acquisitions, dispositions, and ongoing asset activity
- Prepare and review investor reporting, capital account statements, and waterfall calculations
- Ensure accurate tracking of equity, debt, and partnership allocations across multiple entities and funds
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management in partnership with leadership
- Build and enhance financial models and reporting dashboards to support investment decisions
- Own and optimize use of QuickBooks, including system architecture, integrations, and process automation
- Drive implementation of new financial systems, tools, and technology to scale the platform
- Develop internal controls, policies, and procedures to support a growing institutional business
- Partner cross-functionally with acquisitions, asset management, and executive leadership
- Manage and mentor accounting staff as the team grows
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
- 7–12+ years of experience in real estate fund accounting or a similar environment
- Strong experience with commercial real estate (office, industrial, retail, or mixed-use)
- Deep understanding of fund structures, waterfalls, and investor reporting
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks and implementing scalable accounting systems
- Proven ability to build processes in a startup or high-growth environment
- Strong financial modeling and analytical skills
- Technology-forward mindset with experience improving systems and workflows
- Highly detail-oriented with strong leadership and communication skills
