Sagicor invites applications for a suitably qualified candidate to join our subsidiary, Barbados Farms Limited in the position of Financial Controller, Grade 4.
Job Summary
The Financial Controller will be a people-focused and results-driven individual who can take on the most technically demanding and subjective elements of the financial reporting and management accounting duties at the Company. He/she will work closely with the General Manager, and Head Office as needed, to ensure that the Company is focused on delivering business objectives from a finance perspective. The Financial Controller applies financial acumen and analytical skills and will be responsible for providing the business with robust, timely, and insightful reports that enable the Company to make informed commercial judgements and decisions.
Key Duties And Responsibilities
- Summary of Key Functional Responsibilities:
- The entire accounting function of Barbados Farms Limited.
- Preparation of Monthly / Quarterly Management reporting and annual budgets for the Board of Directors of Barbados Farms Ltd.
- Preparation and timely submission of Quarterly and Annual Group Reporting Package to the Group Finance Department
- Preparation of the annual financial statements
- Preparation of Annual Budget and Strategic plan.
- Managing and coordination of the external audit preparation process.
- Financial Planning and Control:
- Assists in the production, analysis, and interpretation of financial reports used for presentation to the Board of Directors and management.
- Ensures best practice financial reporting controls and procedures, which stand up to scrutiny from auditors.
- Takes ownership of the forecast and planning schedule for the finance team and communicates requirements clearly and concisely to the Company on a timely basis. Management Accounting
- Budgeting, costing, financial analysis, profitability, and performance measurement.
- Provides Monthly / Quarterly Management information on agreed dates to the Farm Managers and the General Manager.
- Regulatory and Compliance:
- Participates in tax preparation and filing to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Financial Accounting and Reporting:
- Maintains an up-to-date General Ledger.
- Supervises the department’s accounting team.
- Monitors team member’s performance towards established targets and objectives and takes appropriate action to drive improvement.
- Maintains accounting policies in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards.
- Prepares Monthly / Quarterly financial reporting packages for submission to Head Office complying with Head Office deadlines.
- Manages the audit and the relationship with the external auditors.
- Prepares audit files and provides other support as required.
- Reviews the reconciliation of bank accounts.
- Liaises with external Auditors on technical accounting issues.
- Provides guidance and technical support to staff to ensure the proper treatment of financial transactions.
- Maintains schedules for investments and loans.
- Prepares journal entries as required.
- Ensures the IAS19 and property valuation reports are received on time to support timely completion of the external audit.
- Reconciles Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable monthly.
- Prepares and submits VAT returns by the 21st bi-monthly.
- Payroll:
- Prepares and submits of NIS and PAYE returns by the 15th of each month.
- Processes monthly payroll by the 26th of each month.
- Prepares and submits Pension and Group Life/Health reports to Sagicor by the 31st of each month.
- Prepares job letters for staff.
- Prepares and submits annual PAYE – returns for staff.
- Other:
- Prepares duty-free letters and wire transfer applications to the bank to facilitate importation and payment for spare parts as required.
- Applies to the Ministry of Agriculture for rebates and to the Barbados Revenue Authority for Tax Clearance Certificates to facilitate payment of Land Taxes annually.
- Assists the General Manager, as required.
Education/Experience
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED
- University Degree – Bachelor’s in Accounting or related discipline
- Qualified Accountant with a recognized accounting designation, e.g., ACCA, CPA, CGA
- A minimum of five (5) years post qualification experience in the accounting field.
- Proven leadership capability in a financial role, with the ability to link the finance strategy to the overall business strategy.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and accounting and consolidation software.
- Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards.
- Management accounting and forecasting experience.
- Ability to analyze financial performance against budget and other objectives.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels both internally and externally.
- Good administrative and organizational skills.
- Effective decision-maker with demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to identify and implement process improvements.
- The ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines while making high level decisions on a wide range of issues.
