Chief Financial & Administrative Officer

Supervises Platform Services Team (staff of 17, including 6 direct reports)

Location: Hybrid work environment. Strong preference for Minneapolis (relocation support provided and open to relocation within six months/one year), open to other Alight Hub locations including Washington, D.C.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship

This is a full-time position. We’d love for our next CFAO to get started in September or October of this year but we are open to timeline for the right candidate.

The Role

The Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (CFAO) will make significant contributions to the strategic and operating planning of Alight. The CFAO will demonstrate the highest standard of integrity, leadership, and credibility inside the organization and in representation to affiliates, donors and auditors.

The CFAO is responsible for all financial matters of Alight and its affiliate organizations. The CFAO leads the Platform Services team which includes global finance and accounting, grants and contracts administration, treasury, logistics and procurement, information technology (IT), facilities & office administration, and office operations. The CFAO will establish policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems and ensure legal and regulatory compliance for all shared services functions.

The CFAO reports to the CEO and is part of a 7-person Executive team consisting of the Chief Operations Officer, Chief Marketing & Engagement Officer, Chief People Officer, Director of Global Enterprises, and Director of Customer Insights. The CFAO is the primary liaison with Alight’s affiliated organizations. The CFAO is responsible for reporting to the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors.

Executive Leadership

As a true business partner to the CEO, Enterprises, and Affiliates, assess organizational performance against both the annual budget and Alight’s strategy. Develop tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations.
Engage the board finance committees around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model(s) and operational delivery. Assist in establishing yearly objectives and meeting agendas, and selecting and engaging outside consultants (auditors, investment advisors).

Financial Strategy & Planning & Systems

Lead the forecasting of Alight’s future platform services needs and managing of Alight’s resources.
Prepare and monitor annual budgets for organization, including direct and indirect costs for field and headquarters offices, revenues from programs and fundraising, expenses and adequate bottom line.
Conduct regular analysis and updating of budget projections, as well as analysis and negotiation of indirect cost rates, recovery and relevant impact in the cash flow and financial stability of the organization.
Prepare and present reports for Alight’s CEO, executive management team, and board of directors.
Foster financial leadership, efficiency, systemization and discipline throughout the organization through the development, administration, review, and updating of financial policies, procedures, and plans.
Develop and maintain a highly structured, rules-based finance system that is transparent and verifiable.
Responsible for preparation, timeliness, integrity and objectivity of Alight’s financial statements and reports.
Ensures correct consolidation and reconciliation of all headquarters and field ledgers, including the Alight general ledger.
Effectively partner and coordinate with external auditors during annual organizational audit.

Grants Administration & Treasury

Oversee NICRA grant review & analysis.
Risk management associated with grant proposals.
Responsible for overseeing the management of all grants to insure accurate and timely reports to donors.
All treasury functions, specifically related to bank accounts and cash transfers to the field, managing foreign currency risk.

Information Technology

Foster information systems leadership and oversee technology platforms ensuring the efficient flow of useful information throughout the organization in a secure and stable environment.
Safeguard proprietary and private data and information
Oversee practices and policies, ensuring Alight’s information systems are simple, secure, safe and functional – safeguarding proprietary and private information.
Plan for and execute upgrades, rollouts and refreshes of hardware and software systems ensuring Alight is competitive and a technologically efficient place to work.

Facilities & Office Administration

Oversee the maintaining of all equipment leases and contracts.
Ensure appropriate conditions of all facilities to promote smooth day-to-day operations of the organization and ability of staff to be productive and efficient.
Manage facilities issues, concerns and emergencies.
Negotiate and oversee management of capital purchases and leases and facilities leases, manage leases and assets, and oversee communications and interactions with the landlord and other external facilities partners.
Oversee the purchase or leasing of office equipment and the related contracts with vendors.
In collaboration with the Executive Team, work to develop appropriate organization’s administrative policies and procedures.

Supply Chain & Procurement
Oversee the supply chain and procurement policies and systems to ensure compliance with best practice, donor requirements and the legal provisions.
Oversee direct supply chain technical support to Enterprises and Affiliates and adapt any supply chain tools/templates as needed.
Integrate with technical teams during the proposal development process and throughout program implementation in areas where supply chain and technical activities intersect.
Ensure Enterprise and Affiliate offices have adequate insurance policies in place for property, vehicles and staff.
Mitigate the risk of fraud and corruption in all operations by ensuring appropriate controls and oversight are in place.

Team Leadership

Supervise and lead Platform Services staff. This includes being fully-staffed; ensuring staff are properly trained on duties and expectations are clear; conducting assessments and providing coaching and feedback timely and appropriately.
Develop staff capacity through mentoring and training.

Travel: Anticipated 15-20%. The employee must be able to travel as required for standard business purposes, both domestically within the US and internationally.

The employee must be available to work outside normal office hours, including weekends, as required to meet deadline-based deliverables.

Qualifications

We’re also looking for the following technical competencies:
Undergraduate degree in Finance/Accounting; Masters Degree in Finance or related field preferred. CPA preferred.
At least 15 years advanced finance, accounting, and senior management experience, preferably in the humanitarian sector. Other non-profit or government experience helpful.
Strong computer skills and experience with accounting software packages, preferably Serenic/Sylogist.
Experience with US government grants strongly preferred.
Strong leadership ability.
Ability to motivate staff.
Excellent organizational management skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Good interpersonal skills and flexibility.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Lead and manage effectively in high stress situations.
Strong passion for humanitarian causes.
Ability to travel internationally as required.
Past proven experience in the complex environments where Alight works and ideally humanitarian experience in politically unstable environments

Compensation range $210,000 – $250,000
