The vision for the Northland Finance team is to develop a high-functioning, effective and efficient finance function with scalable capabilities and processes to support finance operations, business growth, and compliance. Reporting to the CFO, the Director, Tax will lead the global tax function across the Northland group of companies, recommending and executing compliance practices and tax planning strategies for all tax matters.
The Director, Tax will oversee the preparation of the Canadian tax returns at provincial and federal levels, work with eternal service providers to ensure continued compliance in all foreign jurisdictions and will support the broader finance team with all tax queries, audits, tax accounting and elements of international tax.
The ideal candidate must have a collaborative, professional, and service-oriented approach when interacting with business partners, utilizing strong communication skills and interpersonal skills and excel at leading teams.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Reporting:
Manage all Northland Group’s tax compliance activities, to ensure all necessary tax returns are prepared and filed accurately, completely and in a timely manner.
Lead and supervise the preparation of appropriate information returns and all direct and indirect tax returns in accordance with applicable legislative requirements
Ensuring timely tax filings in all global jurisdictions. Reviews all tax returns and ensure the availability of supporting reconciliations with accounting records.
Ensure compliance and prompt payment of all required corporate tax installments.
Lead and assist in all tax authority relations, including remittances, assessments, reassessments and audits.
Support the application and compliance for issues related to indirect taxes.
Prepare and/or review tax provisions for audited and reviewed financial statements.
Prepare and/or review taxable income forecasts, tax notes and required reconciliations.
Define, optimize, and ensure proper execution of cross-border transfer pricing structures and positions including compilation and maintenance of all relevant contemporaneous documentation.
Ensure compliance with internal control policies on tax-related matters.
Identification and assessment of key tax risks and exposures, and outstanding issues/items and prioritization of completion.
Work with the rest of the Finance team, external tax consultants, and tax lawyers to ensure tax positions are appropriate and optimized
Liaise with external auditors during annual audits/reviews of regulatory financial statements.
Liaise with various tax authorities
Familiarize self with, and maintain proficiency with, all accounting and tax software and programs used by the Northland Group.
Assist with tax due diligence for new contracts, new business ventures or selective potential M&A opportunities.
Remain current on tax law and tax code updates, as reasonably possible.
