Location: San Francisco Bay Area
Director of Finance | Luxury Boutique Waterfront Hotel | San Francisco
Base Salary: $175,000–$185,000 + up to 40% bonus
Location: San Francisco, CA
Local candidates strongly preferred
We are conducting a confidential search for a Director of Finance on behalf of an award-winning luxury boutique waterfront hotel in San Francisco’s iconic Fisherman’s Wharf district. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity within a historic, design-forward property housed in a landmark early-1900s warehouse building, known for its exposed brick, timber architecture, elevated guest service culture, and breathtaking bay views. The hotel features 250+ guestrooms and suites, a signature restaurant and bar, strong transient demand, and active group/event business, creating meaningful operational complexity.
This role is ideal for a finance leader who thrives in independent-thinking boutique environments and understands how to balance ownership priorities, operational partnership, compliance rigor, and commercial agility.
The Opportunity
The Director of Finance serves as the strategic financial leader for the hotel and is responsible for the full accounting function, including:
- Monthly close, financial statements, and owner reporting
- Annual budget, rolling forecasts, and long-range planning
- Labor productivity and payroll analysis
- Cash flow management and asset protection
- Internal controls, audit readiness, and policy compliance
- CapEx and reserve planning
- Departmental financial partnership with Operations, Rooms, F&B, Sales, and Engineering
- Local tax, licensing, and municipal ordinance compliance
- Balance sheet reconciliations and working capital oversight
- Leadership of on-property accounting team and workflow processes
This is a highly hands-on role requiring a finance executive who can both operate strategically and stay close to the details.
Critical Must-Have Background.
To be considered, candidates must bring prior decentralized hotel accounting experience.
This requirement is non-negotiable.
The ideal profile comes from a luxury hotel, boutique hotel, or lifestyle hospitality environment where the finance leader has had true on-property ownership of:
- AP / AR
- payroll workflows
- banking and cash controls
- local tax filings
- licensing / permits
- purchasing controls
- month-end close
- forecasting
- direct partnership with hotel leadership and ownership
Candidates coming exclusively from highly centralized corporate shared-services environments without strong property-level accountability will not be the right fit.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We are targeting a finance leader with:
- 5+ years of progressive hotel finance leadership experience
- Prior Director of Finance, Assistant Director of Finance, or Hotel Controller background
- Luxury, boutique, or upper-upscale hotel exposure
- Strong F&B financial acumen
- Experience supporting a high-touch guest service environment
- Strong command of California compliance and local tax structures
- Excellent communication skills with ownership, GMs, and department heads
- Ability to lead, mentor, and develop an on-property accounting team
- CPA, MBA, or related certifications preferred
Local Market Preference
Because of the property’s ownership structure, pace, and leadership visibility, local San Francisco Bay Area candidates are strongly preferred.
The client highly values leaders who already understand:
- San Francisco labor environment
- local tax and ordinance nuances
- city business licensing
- market seasonality
- union/non-union dynamics in the Bay Area hospitality space
- competitive labor landscape within luxury and boutique hotels
Why This Role Stands Out
This is an opportunity to join a storied San Francisco luxury boutique asset with exceptional brand equity, a world-class location, and a strong culture of individuality and personality-driven hospitality.
The role offers the chance to make an immediate impact in an environment where finance is viewed as a true strategic business partner—not simply a reporting function.
