Summary:
Our client, a law firm based in Washington, DC with a team of 40–60+ attorneys, is seeking a Director of Finance to serve as their senior financial leader. This role owns the full finance function from day-to-day accounting operations to strategic financial guidance for firm leadership. Ideal candidates bring deep law firm finance experience and the ability to go beyond the numbers, translating financial performance into actionable insight for partners and executives.

What You'll Own
- Lead all accounting operations including GL, AP/AR, payroll, trust accounting, and cash management.
- Own month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Oversee client billing, timekeeping, and revenue recognition through the firm's billing platform.
- Manage payroll and tax compliance.
- Serve as primary liaison to outside accountants for tax filings and year-end reporting.
- Manage partner compensation reporting and annual compensation planning.
- Develop and manage the annual operating budget and multi-year financial forecasts.
- Prepare and present financial reports and dashboards for the Executive and Finance Committees.
Must-Haves
- 10–15+ years of overall experience including 5+ years of leadership experience.
- 5+ years of experience in a law firm or legal services environment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide strategic financial insight — not just reporting, but analysis and recommendations.
- Experience managing payroll, tax filings, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Proven leadership and team management experience.
- Comfort with legal billing platforms and financial systems.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Nice to Have
- CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential.
